Survey Shows Serious Gaps in Physician and Patient Knowledge

To address a startling gap in knowledge about heart disease in women among both patients and primary care doctors, a national Women's Heart Health Initiative was announced September 14, 1995 by 'The Difference in a Woman's Heart' campaign and supported by the American Heart Association (AHA) and American Medical Women's Association (AMWA).

"Four out of five women and one out of three primary care physicians questioned in a recent Gallup survey do not recognize heart disease as the leading cause of death in American women," said Debra R.
