New Studies Launched into Mutations of BRCA1 in Jewish Women

A number of new studies are underway into BRCA1 in the wake of reports that one out of every 100 women of Eastern European Jewish ancestry may carry a mutation in this gene.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the National Center for Human Genome Research (NCHGR) have launched a clinical study in the Washington, D.C. area, asking Jewish women to donate blood samples and provide a genealogy of family members who have had cancer.

In the New York City area, six cancer centers are joining together to study the defect in BRCA1 in women who have been treated for breast cancer. Participants include the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York...
