Number of Infants Born to AIDS Infected Thai Mothers Soaring

At the current rate, 350,000 babies will be born to AIDS-infected mothers in Thailand during the next five years. This is compared to only 5,000 back in 1990, government studies showed.
Currently, a third of such babies contract the disease from their mothers, and they live no more than three years, the state-run Radio Thailand reported.
It said public health officials support a proposed amendment to the Criminal Code that would allow infected mothers to obtain abortions. They say, however, that such abortions must be approved by medical professionals and done in state hospitals. Currently, the law allows abortions only in cases of rape...
