Vertical Transmission of Hepatitis C Virus

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 30th Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of the Liver, held August 20-23, 1995, in Copenhagen, Denmark, "Aim: To assess the risk of vertical transmission of hepatitis C virus (HCV) and relation with viremia and genotype. Methods: During 1994, 5389 consecutive pregnant women were screened for HCV antibody at 3 antenatal clinics in Marseilles. Viral RNA was assessed by RT nested PCR in anti HCV positive mothers, and when positive, by bDNA signal amplification (Chiron). HCV genotypes were assessed by Innolipa (LIPA Innogenetics, Belgium). Viral RNA was assessed by RT nested PCR in breast milk. ...
