Digital Mammography May Help Doctors Detect More Tumors

Computer-enhanced imaging promises to help radiologists find more tumors and detect breast cancer earlier, boosting the success of therapy, according to researchers.

In a laboratory study, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) scientists detected more tumor masses with digitally-enhanced mammography than with standard mammography.

Researchers from UNC-CH schools of medicine and public health used information from real mammograms and inserted computer-generated information. Twenty observers looked at 800 different images.
