Potential Therapy Could be Based on Breast Cancer Gene BRCA1

BRCA1, a gene that makes women susceptible to breast and ovarian cancer when it's defective, may be the starting point for a new cancer therapy.

Genetic immunization with a normal version of the gene destroyed human breast cancer tumors in two out of five mice and extended the lives of others with the disease, researchers report.

"I think it's a major step forward" toward developing a new therapy, said Dawn Willis, director of research communication at the American Cancer Society.
