Judge Won't Expand Lawsuit Against Norplant

A judge has refused to allow more women to join a lawsuit against the makers of the contraceptive Norplant, limiting the suit to women who had problems only when the device was removed.

Cook County Circuit Judge James Quinlan's March 5, 1996, decision does not prevent women who had problems with the inserted device from filing separate lawsuits as individuals.

"Each has to be resolved on its own merits," said John Vardaman, attorney for Norplant manufacturer Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories. "You have to decide whatever the women had - was it caused by Norplant'"
