Researcher Praises Use of Folic Acid but Side Effects Possible

A researcher is praising government orders to fortify such products as bread and pasta with folic acid to prevent birth defects, but warns that there could be some unexpected side effects.

Dr. Mark Dykewicz of Saint Louis University School of Medicine said March 11, 1996 that synthetic folic acid can cause some people to break out in hives or to develop breathing problems, abdominal cramps or itchy skin.

"Although this is a rare allergy, health care professionals should be aware of the possibility of a reaction to synthetic folic acid," Dykewicz said.
