High-Definition Ultrasound Approved by FDA

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved High-Definition Imaging (HDI) ultrasound which will assist doctors in determining when lumps in women's breasts are benign.

Advanced Technology Laboratories (ATL), Seattle, Washington, predicts its HDI ultrasound eventually will cut by 40 percent the 700,000 breast biopsies performed annually in the U.S. Of those biopsies, 180,000 will be diagnosed as cancerous. The remainder will be diagnosed as benign lumps.

A biopsy costs about $2,500, while the 15-minute, ultrasound will cost $75 to $300, ATL said.
