FDA Commissioner Neutral on Illness Controversy

FDA Commissioner Dr. David Kessler said during the week of April 8, 1996 that scientific evidence "...remains inconclusive on the...issue of whether silicone breast implants cause immune-system illnesses," according to a report in the April 15, 1996 issue of The Wall Street Journal.

Dr. Kessler added that "...evidence increasingly points to a higher risk for rupture as implants age." In the April 15, 1996 issue of Annals of Internal Medicine, Dr. Kessler and FDA physicians note that "...none of the silicone-implant studies performed so far has evaluated whether the implants may be linked to a new form of 'atypical' immune-system illness."
