Increased Calcium Intake Reduces Risk of High Blood Pressure

Pregnant women who boost the calcium in their diet substantially reduce their chances for high blood pressure and related health problems.

The incidence of high blood pressure was reduced by 70 percent among women who consumed the equivalent of four servings of dairy products per day.

Results of the Canadian study were published in the April 10, 1996 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The incidence of a serious medical condition known as preeclampsia, which can be fatal to a woman and her fetus, dropped by 62 percent, the study said.
