Antioxidant Vitamins Do Not Prevent Cancer/Heart Disease

Three studies reported in the May 2, 1996, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine have shown that long-term supplementation with antioxidant vitamins does not lower the risk of developing cancer or heart disease (N Engl J Med 1996;334:1145-1149, 1150-1155, 1156-1162, 1189-1190).

Ingestion of high levels of beta carotene may even harm persons at high risk of developing lung cancer. The lead article has provided data from the ongoing Physicians' Health Study.
