Prenatal ZDV Reduces Risk of Maternal HIV Transmission

Prenatal treatment with zidovudine (ZDV) has shown to be a significant factor in reducing the chances of HIV infection being transmitted from HIV positive mothers to their babies.

Marilyn M. Doyle, M.D., University of Texas-Houston Health Science Center researcher, studied the maternal medical records of 104 infants born to 103 HIV infected mothers. The study focused on the use of ZDV in prenatal care. Doyle presented her findings at the annual meeting of the American Pediatric Society/Society for Pediatric Research, held in Washington, D.C., May 6-10, 1996.
