One-Third of Abuse Victims Denied Insurance in New Mexico

A New Mexico State Insurance Department survey has found that nearly one-third of life or health insurers may routinely deny or limit coverage to victims of domestic violence if they learn of the abuse.

The nonscientific survey of 300 underwriters found that 18 percent of carriers specifically cite domestic violence as a reason to deny coverage, and 31 percent will use evidence of domestic violence as a risk factor if it shows up in medical records, although they do not ask specifically for disclosure.
