Testing During First Trimester Proves Risky

Pregnant women undergoing amniocentesis between the 11th and 14th week are 11 times more likely to have a miscarriage than those who wait until the standard 15th to 18th week of pregnancy, according to a study in the July 1996 issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

The authors reported that amniocentesis performed between the 11th and 14th week is associated with a greater rate of immediate post-procedure amniotic fluid leakage and vaginal bleeding, both potentially serious complications to the woman and fetus.
