Self-Treatment for Vaginal Candidiasis Misguided

Women who buy over-the-counter antifungal agents for gynecological symptoms may be using them inappropriately.

According to a study published in the June 1996 issue of The Journal of Family Practice, most women are unable to correctly diagnose vulvovaginal candidiasis, the condition for which these antifungal medications are intended, and are using these agents to treat similar but potentially more severe gynecologic conditions (J Fam Pract 1996;42:595-600).
