Obesity & Diabetes in Migrant & Non-Migrant African Origin Populations

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 10th International Congress of Endocrinology, held June 12-15, 1996, in San Francisco, California, "The impact of weight gain on subsequent risk of known diabetes (NIDDM) was highlighted in 14 year follow up of the large US nurses cohort (98% white) (Ann Int Med 1995; 122: 481) - a 2 fold excess for {{greater than or equal to}}5kg gained or a relative risk (RR) of 5 for attaining a BMI of 24-25 kg/m2 (average for US women) and a RR as high as 40 (95% CI 34-48) for attaining BMI of 31-33 kg/m2.
