ACOG/AAP Responds to Call for Mandatory HIV Testing

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) have voiced strong opposition to the July 3, 1996 resolution by the American Medical Association's (AMA) House of Delegates calling for mandatory HIV testing of all pregnant women and newborns.

ACOG, in a joint statement with AAP, strongly recommended that all pregnant women receive HIV education and counseling and recommends HIV testing in all pregnant women with their consent. For newborns whose mother's HIV status is unknown, ACOG further recommended that the infant's parents be educated concerning HIV testing and encouraged to have the newborn tested.
