Residual Disease in Uterus Leaves Women at Risk

Dr. Judith K. Wolf and colleagues at the University of Texas, Houston, warn that "...women with adenocarcinoma in situ of the cervix often have residual disease in the uterus, regardless of whether the margins on cone biopsy are positive or negative."

In a study of 61 patients with adenocarcinoma in situ, Wolf's team observed the incidence of residual disease in the uterus after preinvasive cells were removed by cone biopsy (Obstet Gynecol 1996;88:82-86). The Houston investigators found that patients with positive cone biopsy margins had a 53% incidence of residual disease. Patients with negative cone biopsy margins had a 33% incidence of residual disease.
