New Parents Feel Rushed, Uninformed

Rushing parents and newborn babies home from hospitals in so-called "drive-thru deliveries" leaves many parents without the knowledge needed to care for their child, according to a survey released August 1, 1996.

"[The] health care system is out of touch with what parents need," said Karen Davis, president of the Commonwealth Fund, which conducts independent research on health and social issues. "There's generally a feeling that parents are on their own with a newborn. Very few get any kind of post-hospital care."
