'Never-Smokers' Wed to Smokers Have 20 Percent Higher Heart Disease Death Rates

A major seven-year study of thousands of married couples confirms the findings of earlier, smaller studies - that never-smokers who live with smoking spouses and thus have tobacco smoke in their household environment have about 20 percent higher heart disease death rates than never-smokers living with non-smoking spouses.

Twenty percent is a relatively small increase, points out Kyle Steenland, author of the report published in the August 15, 1996, American Heart Association Journal.
