Stress Reduction Techniques Lower Blood Pressure In Elderly African-Americans

In the August 1996 issue of Hypertension, Dr. Charles N. Alexander of the Maharishi University in Fairfield, Iowa, et al. evaluate the effects of stress-reduction techniques on blood pressure reduction in a group of elderly African-Americans with hypertension (Hypertension 1996;28:228-237).

The Iowa group compared the effects of three stress reduction methods: the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique, which is a mental technique for stress reduction, a physical relaxation technique called progressive muscle relaxation, and lifestyle education, which served as a control method.
