Bacterial Vaginosis-Associated Microorganisms Increase Risk

Women with bacterial vaginosis-associated microorganisms are at increased risk of histologic endometritis, according to Dr. Sharon L. Hillier of the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Hillier's team examined endometrial biopsies from 178 women with suspected pelvic inflammatory disease (Am J Obstet Gynecol 1996;175:435-441). Sixty-five percent of the women had histologic evidence of endometritis on biopsy. Eighty-five of the women also underwent laparoscopy to diagnose salpingitis and the researchers found that "...salpingitis was present in 68% of those with and 23% of those without endometritis."
