In a study released in the September 1996 issue of Gynecologic Oncology, physicians using Hybrid Capture technology reliably detected human papillomavirus (HPV) infection on a population of women who had already received abnormal Pap smears. HPV infection can be associated with 93 percent of all cervical cancer cases. The researchers compared these "molecular" findings with the diagnostic gold standard, the cervix biopsy.
