Cost-Effectiveness of 3 Screening Strategies: Identification of C. trachomatis and Prevention of Sequelae in Women

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 36th Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC), held in New Orleans, Louisiana, September 15-18, 1996, "C. trachomatis is the most common bacterial STD in the US, with an estimated annual cost of $2.4 billion. To determine the cost-effectiveness of 3 PCR-based screening strategies (Str.1: CDC recommended criteria, Str. 2: age-based criteria, and Str.3: universal testing), we conducted a retrospective cost and outcome based decision analysis for women attending STD (prev.: 13.07%) and family planning (FP) (prev.: 6.91) clinics in Baltimore under the Region III Chlamydia Project.
