Patients vs. The Bottom Line: HMOs and Mental Health

Mental health treatment has always been the step-child of medical plans - with more restrictions on therapy and less generous payments.

A new analysis by Donald Sherbourne of the RAND Medical Outcomes Study, focusing upon women with depression, indicates that treatment currently is inadequate and that the move to managed care may be intensifying some aspects of this problem. This study was presented in a briefing note from the Commonwealth Fund (October 1996).
