Management Guidelines for Steroid-Induced Osteoporosis Released

The American College of Rheumatology (ACR), at its annual meeting October 21, 1996, has released the first guidelines for the management of osteoporosis resulting from commonly prescribed steroid medications.

Experts estimate that more than 30 million Americans may be affected by diseases which may require corticosteroid use.

"Each year, millions of Americans, men and women, are prescribed corticosteroids as standard therapy for many inflammatory diseases," said Dr. Marc Hochberg, co-chair of the ACR task force that developed the guidelines.
