Risk of Stroke, Second Heart Attacks Lowered with Drugs

Cholesterol-lowering drugs can reduce dramatically both the risk of second heart attacks and stroke in women, research suggests.

Previous studies in men have shown similar results.

"The new evidence will give physicians the evidence they need to go ahead and change the way they are treating women patients," said Dr. Sandra J. Lewis, director of cardiac research at the Portland Cardiovascular Institute.

Lewis presented details November 10, 1996, at the American Heart Association's 69th Scientific Sessions in New Orleans, Louisiana.
