According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the American Society of Cytopathology 44th Annual Scientific Meeting, held November 5-9, 1996, in Denver, Colorado, "Introduction: Gardnerella vaginalis has been implicated as an important cause of acute chorioamnionitis. In cervical smears, G. vaginalis is recognized by a predominance of coccobacilli and clue cells. This study was performed to determine if an association exists between pregnant women with such a bacterial shift and the later development of chorioamnionitis.
