Drinking Alcohol Triples Orally Supplemented Estrogen Level

Drinking alcohol can increase circulating estrogen in postmenopausal women taking oral estrogen substantially, according to an article in the December 4, 1996, issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association.

Elizabeth S. Ginsburg, M.D., from the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, and colleagues conducted a double-blind, crossover study of 24 postmenopausal women to determine the effects of moderate alcohol consumption on the circulating level of estradiol, the most important of the estrogen hormones (JAMA, 1996;276:1747-1751).
