Women Often Undertreated for Cancer Pain

Women, children, ethnic minorities, and the elderly are more likely to be undertreated for cancer pain, Rhonda Nichols, a pain management clinical nurse specialist at San Francisco General Hospital told a symposium on Cancer Pain, November 20, 1996, in New York City.

"Women are less likely to report their pain, they're less likely to be listened to, and [less likely to have] their pain taken seriously. There is this unfounded belief that women tend to exaggerate their pain, or that they have low pain tolerance, ... [and as a result] pain may be dismissed in women," Nichols said.
