Abortion Link May Be from Biased Responses

Reports linking abortion with an increased risk of breast cancer may be flawed because many women may have inaccurately reported their abortion history to researchers, a study suggests.

The research, published December 12, 1996, in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, added fuel to a heated controversy about whether an elective abortion can cause breast cancer. At least five studies have found that having an abortion increases breast cancer risk, while six others have found no such linkage. Still another study found that abortion lowered the risk of breast cancer.
