According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the First International Conference on Emerging Zoonoses held November 24-28, 1996 in Jerusalem, Israel, "Early laboratory confirmation of maternal Toxoplasma gondii infection acquired during pregnancy, and of congenital infection in the neonate, can greatly assist in determining the most appropriate form of clinical management. In the mother, serological confirmation of recent infection based on the detection of IgM can be problematic since IgM has been reported to persist in some cases for up to several years.
