New Zealand Women File Silicone Breast Damage Claims

More than 1,000 New Zealand women who had silicone-gel breast implants have filed compensation claims in the U.S. against manufacturer Dow Corning.

Wellington lawyer Michael Okkerse, acting for the claimants, said the women's claim met the February 16, 1997, deadline set for filing claims. A U.S. bankruptcy court had set the deadline, after which women would be barred from seeking compensation from Dow Corning.

Okkerse represents between 1,000 and 1,100 women who filed claims by the deadline. Some others may have filed independently.
