Bias in Medicare Reimbursement for Gender-Specific Procedures

Gender bias limits Medicare reimbursement for female-specific surgical procedures, according to research reported in the March 1997 issue of Gynecologic Oncology.

In a comparison of gender-specific surgical procedures, male-specific procedures, such as prostatectomy, were reimbursed at a 44 percent higher rate overall than female-specific procedures, such as hysterectomy. Researchers conducted this study to evaluate discrepancies in federal reimbursement for gender-related procedures and assess the financial impact of any gender bias.
