Cervical Cancer

Disease Kills 25,000 Latin American Women Each Year

More than 25,000 women die annually from cervical cancer in Latin America and the Caribbean due, in large part, to ineffective control programs, reports the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

Instead of concentrating on women between the ages of 35 and 60, who account for 60 percent of all cases of cervical cancer, many programs misdirect their resources, focusing disproportionately on young women at lower risk of contracting the disease.

Cervical cancer is caused by a malignant tumor that appears on the cervix of the uterus. When detected in its early stages, the disease is both preventable and curable.
