Nevada State Senate Outlaws Procedure

Mutilating a young girl's genitalia as part of a cultural ritual would be punishable by up to 10 years in prison, under a bill approved April 30, 1997, by the Nevada State Senate.

SB192 targets the practice of female genital mutilation, or FGM, routinely practiced in Africa, the Middle East, and some parts of Asia. It's designed to diminish a girl's sexual desire to ensure virginity.

During hearings over the last two months, lawmakers learned that FGM occurs in Nevada but is rarely reported. That information coupled with an influx of foreigners to the state prompted Senate Human Resources Chairman Ray Rawson, R-Las Vegas, to sponsor a bill...
