Abuse Counseling Records Protected in Massachusetts

Massachusetts' highest court has granted victims of domestic violence greater protection from attempts to obtain their counseling records.

The Supreme Judicial Court (SJC) ruled in favor of the New Hope Shelter for women in Attleboro, Massachusetts, which had refused to turn over domestic abuse counseling records for a woman who was allegedly battered and raped by a former boyfriend.

Defense lawyers seek such records to try to help their clients' cases.
