Defense Department Fills Unique Niche

In just five years, the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) has become one of the largest funders of breast cancer research in the country, second only to the National Cancer Institute. The department has spent almost $500 million since 1992 on research into the causes, prevention, screening, detection, diagnosis, and treatment of breast cancer.

A new report from a committee of the Institute of Medicine (IOM), says that DOD's Breast Cancer Research Program has grown to fill a unique niche among breast cancer research funders, and is a promising vehicle for forging new ideas and scientific breakthroughs in the fight against cancer.
