Menstrual Phase Linked To Ineffective Mammograms

Menstruating women have twice the risk of false-negative mammogram results when breast cancer screening is done during the last two weeks of their menstrual cycle, according to a study in the August 15, 1997 issue of Cancer.

"Although the medical community recognizes the benefits from screening are smaller and slower to appear in younger compared to older women, we still do not know why," says Dr. Cornelia Baines, the study's principal investigator and an associate professor in the University of Toronto (U of T) department of public health sciences.
