Dealing with Wife Abuse When Partners Are Patients of the Same Physician

Researchers have developed guidelines to assist physicians in dealing with wife abuse when the male and female partners are patients of the same physician.

The guidelines appear in the September 10, 1997 issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

A 1994 Statistics Canada survey of 12,300 women who had ever been in a common-law relationship or married revealed three out of 10 were abused by their partners at least once during their life. However, very little research has been done on the effect on a physician's decision-making when he/she is caring for both partners.
