AIDS Rate Increases among Women during First Half of 90s

The number of U.S. women diagnosed with AIDS has increased to almost 20 percent of all adult AIDS cases, based on estimates of those diagnosed in 1995.

Pascale M. Wortley, M.D., M.P.H., and Patricia L. Fleming, Ph.D., from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, Georgia, analyzed national surveillance data on women 13 years of age and older (JAMA, September 17, 1997;278:911-916).

They noted that the incidence has increased substantially among young women (those born between the years 1970 and 1974) who acquired AIDS through heterosexual contact. They found an almost six-fold increase in incidence between 1991 and 1995, from 0.9...
