Family Violence Issues Lacking in Medical and Nursing Textbooks

Medical and nursing textbooks inadequately address family violence issues, including domestic violence, abuse in pregnancy, elder abuse, childhood sexual abuse, and sexual assault, according to a study in the October 1997 issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

The study concluded that despite the need for education for physicians, nurses, and medical and nursing students in domestic violence, there is not enough information in current textbooks regarding domestic violence, abuse in pregnancy, elder abuse, and sexual assault. Since authors of textbooks determine the material to be included, exclusion could indicate a lack of priority, shortage of space, or lack of experience...
