Mammography News is Good, But More Work Needed

The following is a statement released by the office of Donna E. Shalala, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services:

"The [U.S.] Centers for Disease Control and Prevention today [October 9, 1997] reports the good news that more women are getting mammograms. In the 39 states which reported to CDC, the proportion of women 40 and older who reported having had a mammogram during the previous two years increased from approximately 53 percent in 1989 to more than 69 percent in 1995. This indicates that in a span of just six years, we saw an increase of almost 30 percent in use of mammography by American women.
