Urine from Interstital Cystitis Patients Contains A Low Molecular Weight, Heatstable Antiproliferative Factor

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 18th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Urogynecologic Society, held September 25-28, 1997, in Tucson, Arizona, "Objective: Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a chronic bladder disease for which the etiology is unknown. It has been hypothesized that the epithelial abnormalities commonly seen in IC may result from exposure to a urinary toxin. We, therefore, examined the effects of urine from IC patients and controls on the proliferation of primary cultured normal adult human bladder epithelial (HBE) cells in vitro.
