Center Helps Victims Overcome Nightmares

The University of New Mexico is trying to keep victims of sexual assault from having nightmares night after night for year after year.

"Victims of sexual assault will develop the worst insomnia that I've ever seen, all as a function of nightmares," said Dr. Barry Krakow, who heads a study at UNM's Sleep Research Center on such nightmares. "I want you to imagine waking up screaming from a nightmare at least 250 nights out of the year."

Krakow said women who have been sexually assaulted have an average of five nightmares a week for as long as 20 years.
