Cash Crunch Forces Cutback in Screening Program

A Washington state program to screen low-income patients for breast and cervical cancer won't accept new patients after January 1, 1998, because of a cash crunch.

Washington received $3.2 million from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for its 1998 Breast and Cervical Health Program, said Lincoln Weaver, director of the state Health Department's Office of Community Wellness and Prevention.

That's about $500,000 less than 1996, said Louise Galaska, CDC.
