New Technique Could Reduce the Number of Multiple Births

Researchers in California have pioneered a new assisted reproductive technique (ART) that could reduce the number of multiple births with the added benefit of being potentially less expensive than other fertility treatments.

The new technique, called FASIAR (follicle aspiration, sperm injection, and assisted rupture) combines aspects of two other techniques: intrauterine insemination (IUI) and gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT). In IUI, sperm is injected into the uterine cavity close to the egg. GIFT differs in that the egg and sperm are mixed together in the laboratory and then transferred directly into the fallopian tube.
