Characterization of a Factor in Cervico-Vaginal Lavage Fluid (CVL) That Stimulates HIV-1 Expression

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the Conference on HIV-1 Infection, Mucosal Immunity, and Pathogenesis, held September 11-13, 1997, in Washington, D.C., "In previously reported experiments (in press, AIDS), CVL collected in saline from participants in the Women's Interagency HIV Study (WIHS) stimulated increased virus production. HIV infected HPB-ALL T cells and monocytic U1 cells by up to 50-60 fold above control. In this study we determined physical characteristics of the factor. The CVL factor was stable to heating at 100(degree)C for up to 5 min and in several samples heating increased the HIV stimulatory activity indicating the factor was not a heat-labile...
