Aquatic Exercise: Low Scores for Bone Impact; High for Well-being

Osteopenia sufferers may find that aquatic exercise classes increase their fitness level and sense of well-being; but a new study shows a water work-out does not increase bone density significantly.

There are many "aquaticize" classes available in today's fitness-conscious society. These classes consist of an exercise program completed in a swimming pool in waist-high water. These programs do not deliver the high level of body impact that accompanies such exercise programs as step-aerobics, and thus, they are popular with older women. On the other hand, it is weight-bearing exercise that exerts some stress on the skeletal system that initiates bone response.
